NEW YORK – Police investigating the discoveries of 10 sets of human remains on New York's Long Island say they believe it's the work of a serial killer instead of multiple killers.
Suffolk County police Commissioner Richard Dormer says in an interview posted on Newsday's website Tuesday the fact that all the victims may be linked to the sex trade backs the single-killer theory.
The remains were found strewn along a remote beach parkway and elsewhere. Police have identified only five of the 10 victims. Those five were women working as escorts.
The investigation began as a hunt for missing New Jersey prostitute Shannan Gilbert, last seen a year ago. She hasn't been found. Dormer says detectives don't think her case is connected.
