A school district in Pennsylvania is reportedly defending its plan that groups students according to their race.

The School District of Lancaster, which has roughly 11,000 students, began placing students from its junior class at McCaskey East High School in different homerooms based on race and gender in December. Each class is led by a teacher of the same race and gender, WGAL.com reports.

School officials believe research indicates that students with strong mentors perform better in school.

"We said, 'Hey, the data shows that some of our students are underperforming. Can mentoring help them in both attendance, grades and standardized testing?'" McCaskey East Principal Bill Jimenez told the website.
