Philadelphia School District Aims to Close Up to 50 Buildings

The School District of Philadelphia says it plans to close up to 50 buildings in the next three years as a way to get rid of tens of thousands of extra seats that are going unused.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-- District officials said Thursday they have 70,000 more seats than they need spread across the city. By combining some schools and reorganizing grades the district says it can cut its excess seats in half by 2014.

The district currently has about 155,000 students, a number it expects to fall about 10,000 in the next three years. Officials say the current enrollment is about 67 percent of the district's capacity.

Public meetings will be held on the closures with final decisions made in January.
