Ga. man pretending to be soldier gets prison term

AUGUSTA, Ga. – A Georgia man has been sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison after he was caught last year impersonating an Army soldier to get his hands on military gear at Fort Gordon in Augusta.

Anthony Todd Saxon apologized to his family, the military and a federal judge Monday, saying he dressed and posed as a soldier because he had trouble letting go after the military discharged him for medical reasons in 1994. Saxon pleaded guilty in January to impersonating a soldier and to two gun crimes.

A judge sentenced Saxon to four years and nine months in prison, mostly for the charges that Saxon illegally owned guns because he's a convicted felon.

Prosecutors say Saxon also fooled his own family into thinking he was deploying overseas to Afghanistan.
