NEW YORK – Firefighters have saved a historic New York City church from destruction by cutting a hole in its roof to fight the flames that erupted in its attic.
The fire broke out at the 183-year-old Church of St. James the Apostle at about noon Monday. It was brought under control about 90 minutes later.
St. James the Apostle is the second-oldest Catholic church in Manhattan. It was landmarked by the city in 1966.
A fire department spokesman says no one was injured in the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
