ARMONK, N.Y. – The wreckage of a single-engine plane that killed four people in a weekend crash has yielded no immediate clues as to why the pilot declared an emergency two minutes after taking off from New York's Westchester County Airport.
National Transportation Safety Board investigator Ralph Hicks says pilot Keith Weiner told air traffic controllers he was having an emergency but did not give details.
Killed in Saturday afternoon's crash were the 63-year-old pilot; his 51-year-old wife, Lisa, 51; their 14-year-old daughter, Isabel; and her friend Lucy Walsh, also 14.
Weiner was planning to fly the 30-year-old Cessna to Montauk.
According to the cockpit recordings, he sounded calm and composed moments before the crash. The Journal News reports that the recording was posted on the aviation website LiveATC.net.
