A Good Samaritan in Oakland, Calif., was shot in the head and suffered a life-threatening injury early Wednesday morning as he and his family delivered a fish dinner to a homeless man, The San Jose Mercury News reported.
The shooting occurred at 12:30 a.m., after the victim had just delivered fish, French fries and soda to a man named William, the paper said. The victim is known in the area as “Brother John,” because he and his wife reportedly cook hot meals and deliver them to dozens of area homeless.
The shooter reportedly drove up alongside of the victim’s van and opened fire. The victim, 29, whose name was not released, was with his wife and two young children at the time, according to the report.
"There was not one word," William told The Mercury News. “All those shots, I had to duck. (The victim) didn't have time to duck. The kids and the wife were screaming and hollering.”
The man is on life support at an Oakland hospital. His wife, who was grazed by a bullet, suffered minor injuries, according to the report.
A $25,000 reward was offered for information leading to the gunman's arrest, The Associate Press reported.
