SANTA PAULA, Calif. – Authorities say a small plane has crashed next to an airport in Southern California, and two people are dead.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer says the Cessna C180 took off from Santa Paula airport in Ventura County at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Kenitzer says the plane quickly lost engine power, hit an electric wire and crashed into a riverbed a quarter mile from the airport.
The Ventura County Fire Department says police and firefighters hiked down to the plane and found one person dead inside, then searched the area and found another dead victim.
Details about the victims or their destination were not immediately available.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash. The airport is 12 miles northeast of Ventura and 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
